Chart of the Week | The political cost of war
With just days to go before the midterm elections, the tide is turning against Donald Trump. According to betting markets, the odds of a Democratic sweep next week now stand at 65%. And the main culprit is pretty clear: energy prices.
The war in Iran could therefore turn into a costly political mistake. Americans were never really sold on this new intervention, tangible gains remain hard to see, and the higher energy bill is very real. Add tariffs on Canadian goods to the mix, which have been particularly unpopular in border states.
Even with a more Democratic Congress, Trump would retain considerable latitude on trade and foreign policy. But politically, something may have shifted: the twilight of the Trump presidency may have begun.
